murderous battle for leadership breaks out. Robert and Rose, two
innocent outsiders, are drawn into a twilight

London is in the grip of an epidemic -
across the city, people are dying in freak accidents, each body yielding
strips of paper carrying indecipherable heiroglyphics. Aiming to clear
his own name after being linked with the victims, Harry uncovers the
most hostile takeover bid of all time. |

The eccentric detectives May and Bryant
have a nasty case of contagious death by murder on their hands, and it's
coming up to Christmas. If the victims weren't from the well connected
upper echelons, their trials might be easier. As it is, they are
obstructed in all kinds of ways as they proceed though a labyrinth of
family allegiances and ancient business practices that lead them to an
improbable idea that no-one wants to believe. Jerry, an upper middle class
girl with family problems of her own joins their highly idiosyncratic
investigation, following her own trail through London, meeting with her
deepest fears on the way. This is a real chiller, with its roots in
the Victorian era of arrogance, ingenuity and xenophobia. |
With the murders getting
more ritualistic as time goes on, the well matched Bryant and May are
under pressure to find the killer, but the truth is by no means simple,
and they are forced to consult a local white witch (look out for this
affectionate portrayal) in order to probe beneath the layers of myth and
Guild history. Highly recommended. ©Helen Knibb 1999 |

An assignment brings Vincent -
permanent student and budding young writer - into the world of Sebastian
Wells and the Prometheus League. Under the guise of a Victorian gaming
society it operates extremist and covert activities. Threatening exposure,
Vincent is thrown into a game of life or
death. |
Soho Black
Matchless detectives Bryant and May return from Christopher Fowler's
Darkest Day, tracking bizarre acts of violence through Soho at the height
of a heatwave. Meanwhile two hired killers, one black, one white, swap smart
post-Pulp Fiction dialogue and film executive Richard Tyler's life turns
into a nightmare after a very strange visit to the washroom. Midas has the
touch, Glory brings glamour and death in her wake and Judy is enchanted. Barbara
simply wants to save Richard who is determined to make a success of his life
even if he has died trying. Discovering how these characters tie together is
just one of the pleasures of a book that, from the cover inward, is strikingly
offbeat.

A collection of short
stories. "You'll find that some of these tales are start-points for my
novels. 'Dale & Wayne Go Shopping' is the where 'Psychoville' began.
'Mother Of The City' was the starter for 'Disturbia' and 'In Persia' is
the jumping-off point for my next novel 'Calabash'." Christopher
